The CHAYCC is a non-profit club for youths aged 8-18 who wish to discover the joys of being outdoors. The CHAYCC is committed to helping its members better themselves, their community, and their environment through outdoor activities.
The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) created a youth program called the Get Outdoors (GO) Program. This program is open to all OFAH members, provided they are between the ages of 8 to 18 and each club must maintain a minimum membership of 10 youth, and one Adult Mentor to assist the members with the organization of the Club, and the activities they participate in. The CHAYCC re-established its GO Program status in 2007.
The uniqueness of this organization is that it is the members who determine the activities that they partake in. Whether it is a day of fishing, or learning about their environment, the members choose what to do. Whether it’s organizing a fundraiser, or participating in a community “clean-up”, it is the members who decide.
The CHAYCC is very flexible towards its members. The Adult Mentors understand that scheduling can be difficult for some families and that often times there is already an activity that a member has committed themselves to, whether it is a sport, or a part-time job. Due to this, the club meets once a month to decide what activities they would like to do for the upcoming months, and what day and time will be the best for the members involved. It is for this reason that parents are always encouraged to attend the monthly meetings. The CHAYCC also respects the individuality of its members, and a member is not expected to participate in an activity unless they want to.
Like other youth clubs, the members are encouraged to learn a range of skills, from co-operating with others to becoming a team leader, from voicing their opinions, to respecting the opinions of others. The members learn skills that will follow them into adulthood. The CHAYCC offers its older members the opportunity to become a Junior Mentor where the member can learn about the administrative aspects of the club, learn leadership skills, and earn community hours for their high school diploma.
Members will also be able to learn about organizations through co-operation and teamwork. The CHAYCC often teams up with other local groups when doing Conservation work, and even some of the outdoor activities such as archery.
Throughout their membership, the youths will have the opportunity to earn badges and Heritage Pins.
